interviewing handymen

i’m interviewing a couple of handymen today for some odd projects around the house and after the first one, I’m thinking it would just be easier to buy a book and do it myself.

The first one that showed up was 20 minutes late – i’m ok with that, i’m usually late. Then I showed him the bathroom and where I wanted to put in the pocket door and he asked me what a pocket door was and then proceeded to tell me that the beams in my house were important – no shit sherlock. Yea, so that pissed me off. Then we went outside to show him the gate that needs to be replaced and he couldn’t figure out how to open it even though I said push it hard, finally I had to open it for him and then he told me the post was strong, I didn’t ask whether or not the post was strong, I asked how long it would take to install a new gate. He told me he could put some plywood up and hinge it – that’s not what I asked. If I had a new gate, how long to put it up?  I finally gave up and didn’t even show him the rest of the projects. His english wasn’t very good and he smelled. I’m all for the little guy trying to make in this world, but seriously dude, listen to your clients, don’t assume they have no idea what they are talking about.

At this point, I’m thinking I should just start taking Sat/Sun’s off and work on the projects around the house, it would be easier…unless any of my friends know of some great handyman’s in the area that speak english, possibly single would be great too 🙂

will report on the second one..later this afternoon
